About Citadelle de Calvi

A Genoese Eagle's Nest Perched on a rocky promontory, the Citadel is the historical heart and soul of Calvi. Built in the 13th century by the Genoese to protect themselves from invasions, it has remained true to its motto: "Civitas Calvi semper fidelis" (The city of Calvi, always faithful). Passing through its imposing fortified gate, one enters a maze of cobbled streets, vaulted passageways, and houses huddled together. According to local tradition, the ruins of Christopher Columbus's birthplace are located here. A Balcony Overlooking the Sea and the Mountains More than just a historical monument, the Citadel offers breathtaking panoramas. Walking along its ramparts, one enjoys a striking contrast between the vastness of the sea and the snow-capped peaks (in winter) of the Monte Cinto massif. Between the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral, a masterpiece of Baroque art, and the former governors' palaces, life here is peaceful, punctuated by birdsong and the sea breeze. It is a timeless place, where every stone tells the story of centuries of resistance and Corsican culture.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Sunset Visit: This is the "magical" moment. The granite stone takes on orange hues, and the view over the Bay of Calvi is illuminated. It's the perfect time to take photos without the harsh glare of the midday sun. Listen to Polyphonic Chants: During the season, concerts of Corsican polyphonic chants are often held in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. The acoustics are exceptional, and the sensory experience is absolutely unforgettable.
