About Chateau du Val
Add to favoritesLocated in Lanobre, on the border between Cantal and Corrèze, the Château de Val is one of Auvergne's most spectacular gems. This 15th-century monument seems to float on the waters of Lake Bort-les-Orgues, a picture-perfect scene that lends it a fairytale air. With its six towers crowned by machicolations and pepperpot turrets, it offers a perfectly preserved medieval silhouette, nestled in a setting of greenery and water. The castle's interior does not disappoint: you will discover richly furnished rooms, a Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise, and spiral staircases leading to contemporary art exhibitions. The contrast between the ancient stones and the modern works creates a unique atmosphere. The visit often culminates on the ramparts, offering a breathtaking panorama of the vast artificial lake and the surrounding rolling landscapes.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Gain some perspective (and distance): To capture the iconic photo of the castle "on the water," don't just stick to the parking lot. Take the hiking trails that skirt the lake or, even better, opt for a scenic boat tour on the lake to admire the fortress from a truly regal angle. Timing is everything: If you can, aim for late afternoon. The setting sun makes the water shimmer and gives the granite stones an absolutely magical golden hue, far from the midday crowds.
