About Chateau-bussy-rabutin
Add to favoritesNestled in a verdant valley in Burgundy, this château reflects the eccentric and resentful personality of its most famous owner: Roger de Bussy-Rabutin, cousin of the Marquise de Sévigné. A courtier disgraced by Louis XIV after writing scandalous chronicles, he was exiled to his estate. To avenge himself on the court he missed, he transformed his château into a monument to his own glory and nostalgia, decorating the walls with hundreds of portraits of courtiers accompanied by often acerbic and witty commentary. A visit offers a unique immersion into the spirit of the 17th century. Visitors will discover rooms with evocative names such as the "Hall of Great Men" or the "Chamber of Gallant Ladies." The architecture, which blends medieval foundations with Renaissance wings, is surrounded by French-style gardens restored according to the original plans, complete with water features and boxwood mazes. It is a castle that speaks, literally, through the mottos and inscriptions that the count had engraved all over the woodwork.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Take the time to read the short captions under the portraits in the gallery; they reveal the Count's biting humor and constitute a veritable "celebrity gazette" from the time of the Sun King.
