About Chateau d'Ancy
Add to favoritesLocated in Burgundy, this château is an absolute architectural marvel: an Italian palace built on French soil. Designed by the renowned Bolognese architect Sebastiano Serlio at the behest of Antoine de Clermont, it displays perfect regularity and symmetry, centered around a square courtyard considered one of the finest achievements of the Renaissance. Its austere and imposing exterior conceals an unexpected richness within, rivaling the grandest palaces of the Italian peninsula. The true treasure of Ancy-le-Franc lies in its wall decorations. It houses one of the most important collections of 16th- and 17th-century murals preserved in France, created by masters of the School of Fontainebleau. The Pharsalus Gallery, with its ochre tones and monumental battle scenes, as well as the Chamber of Arts, transport visitors into the intellectual and aesthetic world of the Valois court. The 50-hectare park, recently restored, surrounds the castle in a verdant setting composed of French-style gardens and 18th-century follies.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Be sure to look up in every room: the coffered ceilings are among the most magnificent in France. The château also offers lantern-lit nighttime tours that enhance the mysterious atmosphere of its painted galleries.
