Add to favoritesDominating the village of Bazoches with its four round towers, this castle was the home of Marshal Vauban, the renowned military engineer of Louis XIV. It was here that he designed the plans for over 300 citadels and fortresses throughout France. The castle, built in the 12th century, was transformed by Vauban into a veritable design office, complete with a 30-meter-long gallery where his engineers and draftsmen worked. The interior has remained very personal: visitors can discover the Marshal's bedroom, his study, and numerous family mementos, as the castle is still inhabited by his descendants. The atmosphere is warmer and more studious than in the grand royal palaces. From the windows, the view of the Morvan hills and the Vézelay Basilica in the distance is absolutely breathtaking.

Bazoches' main attraction is its connection to Vauban; therefore, it is highly recommended to do some research on his fortifications before your visit to fully appreciate the original plans on display. The château is located just 10 km from Vézelay: the ideal approach is to combine the two visits in one day, starting with the château in the morning to avoid the heat and ending with the basilica. Don't miss a stroll through the priest's garden at the rear, often less crowded, which offers absolute tranquility. If you are a military history enthusiast, ask to see the models of the fortifications; they are incredibly precise and allow you to grasp the tactical genius of the man who encircled France with an "iron belt."

Vauban was able to buy the Bazoches estate thanks to an exceptional reward of 80,000 pounds granted by King Louis XIV, in reward for his brilliant conduct during the siege of Maastricht.
