About Chateau de Tanlay
Add to favoritesLocated in Burgundy, along the Burgundy Canal, Tanlay is one of the finest examples of Renaissance and early 17th-century architecture. Surrounded by exceptionally wide moats that give it the appearance of floating, it boasts a remarkably elegant courtyard. The château was a Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion, belonging to the family of Admiral de Coligny, which gives it a rich political and religious history. The château is famous for its League Tower, whose domed ceiling is decorated with a striking fresco: it depicts the Olympian gods in the guise of leading figures at the French court of the time (Catherine de Medici, the Duke of Guise, etc.). It is a rare example of Renaissance political caricature. The white stone façades contrast with the blue slate roofs, and the grand trompe-l'œil gallery is a masterpiece of perspective.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The park is vast and perfect for a bike ride along the Burgundy Canal before the visit. Guided tours are highly recommended as they offer access to private rooms still inhabited by the owning family.
