About Alignements de Carnac
Add to favoritesAn Open-Air Stone Giant The Carnac Alignments constitute the largest concentration of megaliths in the world. Erected between 5000 and 3000 BC by Neolithic populations, these approximately 3,000 menhirs stretch for over four kilometers. Distributed across several main sites such as Menec, Kermario, and Kerlescan, these fields of standing stones fascinate with their rigorous organization in parallel lines. Despite centuries of study, their exact function remains one of humanity's greatest mysteries: astronomical observatory, ancestral place of worship, or symbol of territorial power, Carnac jealously guards its secret. A visit is a true journey through time, where the gray granite of the stones contrasts with the green of the heath and the yellow of the gorse. Beyond the alignments, the site also contains dolmens (collective burial mounds) and imposing tumuli, such as that of Saint-Michel. This unique cultural landscape, shaped long before the pyramids of Egypt, offers a spiritual and wild atmosphere, particularly palpable when the Breton mist envelops the monoliths, restoring their legendary dimension.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
For an authentic and respectful experience, visit between October and March. During this off-season, access to the sites is generally free, allowing you to walk right up close to the stones. However, from April to September, to protect the vegetation and soil, the sites are closed and accessible only on a paid guided tour. If you come in the summer, try to book the last tour of the day: the low-angled light highlights the granite formations, and the shadows cast by the menhirs create a striking visual spectacle, perfect for grasping the solemnity of the place.
