About Chateau de Josselin

Add to favorites

Dominating the Oust Valley, Josselin Castle has been the residence of the Rohan family for over a thousand years. It is a building of two faces: from the river, one admires an impregnable fortress with three massive towers and steep ramparts. But as soon as one enters the main courtyard, one discovers a sculpted granite façade of incredible finesse, a masterpiece of Breton Flamboyant Gothic, adorned with ornate dormer windows and heraldic mottos. The interiors, renovated in the 19th century in a sumptuous Neo-Gothic style, house rich collections of furniture and historical memorabilia. The grounds are equally enchanting, with their renowned rose garden (more than 160 varieties), formal French gardens, and English landscape park. In the former stables, the castle houses an exceptional museum of dolls and antique toys, drawn from the Rohan family's private collection.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

DISCOVER THE DOLL MUSEUM: DOLLS AND TOYS. Over 30 years ago, Antoinette de Rohan discovered a doll collection in the Château's attic, begun in the late 19th century by Herminie de Rohan, the great-grandmother of her husband, Josselin de Rohan. It took her several years to inventory and expand this collection, researching the origins, unique characteristics, and stories of each doll. In 1984, Antoinette de Rohan inaugurated the Museum with hundreds of dolls, the oldest dating back to the 17th century. Gradually, thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, the family collection has grown with new dolls, toys, and games. This has allowed for the organization of varied temporary exhibitions since 1988, each with a different theme. The Rohan collection currently comprises nearly 5,000 pieces, notably a large collection of dolls in Breton costume, an exceptional collection of Japanese dolls, as well as numerous toys, board games, dollhouses, play kitchens, animals, trains, and airplanes from both yesterday and today. This collection is considered the most important private collection of dolls and toys in France.
