About Fort la Latte
Add to favoritesPerched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Emerald Sea, Fort La Latte (or Château de la Roche Goyon) is one of Brittany's most iconic landmarks. This 14th-century medieval fortress, transformed into a coastal defense stronghold under Louis XIV, offers a spectacular sight with its pink sandstone walls defying the waves. Its strategic location, accessible only by two drawbridges spanning natural crevices, has made it a favorite filming location for numerous swashbuckling adventure films. A visit is a true immersion into the coastal defense system. Inside the walls, you will discover the massive keep, cannons pointed out to sea, a furnace for heating cannonballs (used to set enemy ships ablaze), and a charming chapel dedicated to Saint Michael. The highlight of the show remains the climb to the top of the watchtower: the panorama is breathtaking, offering an unparalleled view of Cap Fréhel and the vastness of the English Channel.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The Customs Officers' Path (GR34): Don't just arrive via the parking lot. If you can, walk to the fort from Cap Fréhel along the coastal path. The silhouette of the fortress gradually appearing on the horizon makes this one of the most beautiful hikes in France. Beware of the wind: Even in good weather, the wind can be very strong on the ramparts. Bring a windbreaker, even in summer, and avoid wearing untied hats that could end up in the Breton waves in the blink of an eye.
