About Gerberoy Village de Peintres Et de Roses
Add to favoritesGerberoy, one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France," lies at the center of a triangle formed by Beauvais, Rouen, and Amiens in the heart of Picardy. Reaching an altitude of 188 meters, the village was granted the title of "town" in 1202 by King Philip Augustus. The houses of Gerberoy reflect both Picardy and Normandy influences, where half-timbered construction and brickwork coexist in a charming blend that captivated the post-Impressionist painter Henri Le Sidaner. In spring and summer, climbing roses on the facades transform the village into a veritable rose garden. It is to him that the village owes some of its charm: magnificent Italian-style gardens and the Rose Festival, held annually since 1928 with unwavering success.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
To truly enjoy Gerberoy without the crowds, be sure to avoid Sundays in June (during the Rose Festival) and aim for a weekday morning in May or early June. The secret to a breathtaking view is to take the rampart walk: this grassy path circles the village and offers a glimpse of the poetic interplay of tiled roofs and walled gardens below. For a truly authentic break, settle down on the terrace of one of the small private gardens open to the public (often marked by simple slate signs) rather than at the foot of the collegiate church, and savor a slice of homemade cake in absolute tranquility, accompanied by the buzzing of bees.
