About Chateau de Maisons Laffitte

Add to favorites

A true landmark of 17th-century French architecture, the Château de Maisons-Laffitte is considered the masterpiece of François Mansart. Built for René de Longueil, this elegant estate served as a direct inspiration for the Palace of Versailles. Its perfectly symmetrical facades and the breathtaking mastery of its Great Staircase showcase the pinnacle of the French Classical style. Famous guests, including Louis XIV and Voltaire, have wandered through its luxurious royal apartments and mirrored halls. The estate is also deeply connected to equestrian history. In the 1800s, banker Jacques Laffitte developed the surrounding park, transforming the town into a renowned "Horse City." Visitors today can explore the lavish state rooms, the king's apartment, and unique permanent exhibitions dedicated to racing history. Located just outside Paris, it remains one of the most sophisticated examples of French "art de vivre," blending architectural rigor with aristocratic refinement.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Tip: Look closely at the Great Staircase—it features no central pillar, a true engineering marvel of the 1600s. Advice: Since the town is the "Horse City," take a walk in the park after your visit to spot racehorses during their training sessions.
