About Chateau de Vincennes

Add to favorites

A symbol of the modern state. The building asserts royal power: it protects the capital but also safeguards the kings against uprisings. It was the heart of the French monarchy until 1682, when Louis XIV preferred Versailles. The keep served as a prison from the 16th to the 19th centuries: Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade, and Mirabeau were imprisoned there. Transformed into a barracks and arsenal by Napoleon I, the fortress protected Paris during the invasions of the 19th century. A place of national memory. Restored after the serious damage it suffered during the Second World War, the Château de Vincennes notably houses the French Army Historical Service (SHD).

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For a truly insightful visit to the Château de Vincennes, the trick is to think of it as a "time capsule": it's the only medieval royal castle in France that has retained its original appearance. Don't miss climbing the Keep (the tallest in Europe): instead of just admiring the view, scrutinize the prisoners' graffiti etched into the stone of the cells. This is where figures like the Marquis de Sade and Mirabeau left their mark. The real architectural secret lies within the Sainte-Chapelle. Unlike the one in Paris, it isn't enclosed by other buildings, allowing you to see its Renaissance stained-glass windows (especially the Apocalypse window) bathed in a unique, raking light. An often-overlooked detail: look for traces of the old moats and imagine they were once fed by a diversion from the Marne River. Finally, for the perfect photo, don't just stay in the main courtyard. Exit through the Village gate and walk along the outside of the enclosure, on the Bois de Vincennes side. The contrast between the imposing medieval towers and the greenery of the park is striking, especially at sunset when the white limestone glows.
