About Chateau de Caen

Add to favorites

Founded around 1060 by William the Conqueror, Caen Castle is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Proudly perched on a rocky spur in the heart of the city, this fortress has stood the test of time, evolving from a ducal residence to a military barracks. Its imposing ramparts, meticulously restored, now offer a striking contrast between the medieval architecture and the vibrant city of Caen that sprawls at its base. Beyond its defensive role, the castle has become a true cultural hub. Within its walls, visitors can explore the Exchequer Room, a testament to the splendor of the Anglo-Norman court, or stroll through the Herb Garden. The site also houses the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Normandy, making this fortress a place where the history of the duchy meets contemporary artistic creation. The walk along the ramparts remains the highlight of the visit, offering a 360° panorama of the bell towers of the "City of a Hundred Bell Towers".

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For the best experience, plan your visit for the end of the day to access the ramparts at sunset. The Caen stone then takes on a magnificent golden hue, and the crowds are thinner. What's more, access to the castle grounds and the walk along the ramparts are completely free: it's one of the best viewpoints in Normandy without spending a penny!
