About Chateau de Carrouges

Add to favorites

Located in the heart of the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park, the Château de Carrouges is a striking example of French architecture, famous for its distinctive red brick and granite walls. Spanning seven centuries of history, this majestic estate was held by the same family for generations, lending it a unique soul and a remarkably preserved atmosphere. Its impressive gatehouse, a Renaissance masterpiece, welcomes visitors to a journey through time, from its medieval defensive roots to the refined elegance of the 18th century. Inside, the castle reveals a rich collection of furniture, tapestries, and portraits that tell the story of the Le Veneur lineage. The monumental brick staircase and the vast ceremonial rooms offer a glimpse into the grandeur of French aristocratic life. Outside, the 10-hectare estate features peaceful moats, formal gardens, and orchards, providing a perfect setting for a leisurely stroll. Carrouges is a hidden gem in the Orne department, offering a deep and authentic cultural experience in inland Normandy.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

The Hidden Staircase: Pay particular attention to the grand staircase. Constructed entirely of brick, it is a rare technical and aesthetic feat in France for this period (17th century). Park Visitor Center: The château also houses the Normandy-Maine Regional Natural Park Visitor Center. It's the ideal place to pick up hiking maps and information on local products (cider, perry) to discover in the surrounding area. The Gatehouse: Take the time to admire the gatehouse (the pavilion). It is one of the earliest examples of Renaissance brick architecture in the region, adorned with elegant geometric patterns.
