About Chateau de la Rochefoucauld
Add to favoritesNicknamed "the pearl of Angoumois," this castle has been owned by the same family for over 1,000 years, a record of longevity. It presents a fascinating layering of styles: massive medieval towers frame a Renaissance courtyard whose tiered galleries are directly inspired by those of the Villa Farnese in Italy. The elegance of its façade overlooking the Tardoire River is simply breathtaking. A visit is memorable for two reasons: its grand spiral staircase, a 16th-century masterpiece of stereotomy, and its immense library, which boasts over 18,000 volumes. The castle is still inhabited, which gives it a unique character. Visitors can also explore the kitchens carved into the rock and the state apartments, richly furnished with family portraits.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
A room in the castle is dedicated to costume fittings: children and adults alike can don period costumes for part of the tour. Family photos in the Renaissance courtyard are guaranteed to be a hit.
