About Chateau de Biron
Add to favoritesProudly overlooking the Lède Valley on the border of Périgord and Agenais, the Château de Biron is a true architectural marvel. The seat of one of the four baronies of Périgord, it belonged to the same family, the Gontaut-Biron, for eight centuries. What strikes you upon arrival is its "giant puzzle" appearance: each century has left its mark, layering elements of a medieval fortress, elegant Renaissance living quarters, and classical terraces. Now a listed Historic Monument, the site impresses with its extraordinary size and its two-story chapel, a jewel of the Renaissance. Wandering through its state rooms and vaulted kitchens, you step back in time through the turbulent history of France. It is also a vibrant place that regularly hosts high-caliber contemporary art exhibitions, creating a striking contrast between the ancient stones and modern creations.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Try to arrive in the late afternoon. The panoramic view from the rooftop terraces overlooking the village of Biron and the surrounding forests is sublime as the sun begins to set, tinting the golden stone a honeyed hue. Don't miss the village: The castle is inseparable from the small village nestled at its foot. Take 20 minutes to stroll through the winding alleyways after your visit; this is where you best experience the medieval atmosphere of the site.
