About Chateau de Bourdeilles

Add to favorites

The Duality of a Fortress and a Palace Located on the banks of the Dronne River, in the heart of the Périgord Vert region, the Château de Bourdeilles is a unique site in France, uniting two buildings from entirely different periods on the same rocky terrace. On one side, a 13th-century medieval fortress with its imposing 35-meter-high octagonal keep, designed for defense. On the other, a 16th-century Renaissance palace, a true state residence with refined decor, built by the Bourdeille family to dazzle their guests. This architectural juxtaposition offers a striking summary of the history of the Périgord. The interior of the Renaissance palace houses one of the most prestigious collections of antique furniture in Europe (the Algi Collection), with pieces dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The rooms are adorned with exquisitely painted ceilings and frescoes. Climbing to the top of the keep, you'll enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the village of Bourdeilles and the meanders of the Dronne River. This castle, one of the four baronies of Périgord, is a major witness to the evolution of lifestyles and military strategy in the Dordogne.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For the more adventurous, climbing the 127 steps of the keep is a must: the view over the village's slate roofs is the perfect reward. If you're visiting the castle with family, I recommend trying the historical Escape Game set up in the castle rooms; it's a fun way to discover the secrets of the Barons of Bourdeilles. In summer, opt for visits in the late afternoon to enjoy the coolness of the stone walls and the golden light that highlights the sculpted details of the Renaissance façade. Expert tip: Don't miss a stroll through the village after your visit. The medieval bridge and the old mill offer magnificent viewpoints for photographing the castle complex overlooking the river. For an immersive experience, check the schedule of calligraphy or archery workshops, often offered during school holidays. Finally, if you have the time, combine your visit with a trip to Brantôme, the "Venice of the Périgord," located just a 10-minute drive away.
