About Chateau de Commarque
Add to favoritesThe emotion that overwhelms anyone crossing the edge of the woods to venture into the valley and see Commarque appear, seemingly outside of time and space, belongs to the realm of the unreal… Today, the Commarque family is one of the last of all those who inspired epic tales in the Middle Ages to survive and remain on the land of their ancestors. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, the fortress of Commarque is probably the most complex medieval complex in the Périgord region. It was, in fact, a "co-seigniory": the lordly families lived in the various towers of this fortified village. It is also the most remarkable castle complex in southern Périgord, with its intricate defenses, successive moats, concentric ramparts, and the breathtaking verticality of its 80-meter-high keep, built of fine stonework.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
To truly experience the spirit of Commarque, take the hiking trail that starts from the village of Sireuil rather than parking in the main lot. The approach through the forest offers a breathtaking, direct view of the fortress, as if you were a traveler from the Middle Ages. The site's secret lies in the medieval workshops (archery, stone carving) often offered during the season: they're perfect for keeping children entertained while you enjoy the view. Finally, don't forget your binoculars to observe the rock engravings (replicas) or the valley's wildlife that reclaims the ruins at the end of the day.
