About Chateau de Millandes

Add to favorites

The Josephine Baker Sanctuary Built in the 15th century by the de Caumont family, the Château des Milandes is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, but it owes its worldwide renown to its most famous owner: Josephine Baker. The star of the Revue Nègre and heroic Resistance fighter made it her "Village of the World," raising her twelve adopted children (her "rainbow tribe") there. A visit is a vibrant tribute to her life and her commitments; you will discover her iconic stage costumes, her Resistance medals, and the living spaces that preserve the spirit of this exceptional woman, in a setting that is both sumptuous and profoundly human. The estate is not limited to its emotionally charged interiors. The formal French gardens, designated a "Remarkable Garden," surround the château with a geometric elegance that contrasts with the wild gentleness of the Dordogne Valley. The château is also renowned for its falconry, perpetuating a medieval tradition within a park where nature and history coexist harmoniously. It is a unique stop on the Loire Valley châteaux circuit, as it tells a 20th-century story nestled within a 500-year-old stone setting.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Around 60 birds of prey live at the château in complete harmony with the stones and the surrounding nature. The 6-hectare park provides them with a peaceful environment. Don't miss the birds of prey show in the gardens. To make the most of it, check the schedule upon arrival and take your seat in the stands about 15 minutes early to get a clear view of the château in the background. After the show, take a stroll to the far end of the park to admire the panoramic view over the Dordogne Valley: it's one of the best viewpoints in the region, particularly beautiful as the light begins to fade.
