About Chateau d'Urtubie
Add to favoritesA Sentinel at the Gates of Spain Erected in 1341, the Château d’Urtubie is a rare residence that has belonged to the same family for over six centuries. This exceptional longevity is evident as soon as you pass through its gates: the château has evolved through the ages, transforming from a defensive medieval fortress into an elegant pleasure residence in the 17th and 18th centuries. A listed Historic Monument, it has witnessed the unfolding of French history, notably hosting King Louis XI for the signing of a peace treaty in 1463. A Journey Between Elegance and Botany The interior tour is a true journey through time, with richly furnished salons, Brussels tapestries, and a charming 17th-century chapel. But Urtubie's true gem also lies in its grounds. The estate extends over 6 hectares of English-style parkland, where flower gardens mingle with an exhibition dedicated to the beneficial plants of the Basque Country. It is a peaceful and refined stop, offering a striking contrast to the hustle and bustle of the nearby Basque coast.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Enjoy the plant exhibit: Don't miss the small 18th-century orangery, which houses an exhibit on the medicinal properties of local plants. It's a unique and very informative aspect of the visit. Afternoon tea in the park: Weather permitting, plan a break in the gardens. The tranquility is absolute, and it's the perfect place to escape the summer crowds of Saint-Jean-de-Luz while still enjoying a prestigious atmosphere.
