About Chateau Hautfort
Add to favoritesThe Majesty of the Grand Siècle in the Dordogne A former medieval fortress transformed into a pleasure residence in the 17th century, the Château de Hautefort surprises with its resemblance to a Loire Valley château seemingly lost in the southwest. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the village, it is one of the rare examples of classical architecture in the Périgord region. Its Mansard-style domes and slate roofs lend it a unique nobility. Inside, a visit reveals richly furnished apartments, a remarkable collection of tapestries, and a perfectly preserved period kitchen, all testifying to the lifestyle of a great aristocratic lineage. What makes Hautefort world-renowned are, above all, its French formal gardens. Classified as Remarkable Gardens, they unfold in terraces with fascinating geometric precision: intricate boxwood parterres stretch as far as the eye can see, accentuating the lines of the château. A 30-hectare English-style park completes this setting, offering shaded walkways and panoramic views over the valley. It is a place of aesthetic perfection where every grove and every stone seems to have been placed to compose a masterpiece.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
For a truly unique experience, I highly recommend the theatrical evening tours offered during the summer (July and August). The château is illuminated by torchlight, and costumed actors bring the estate's history to life through anecdotes. If you visit during the day, climb up to the Tour de Bretagne: it offers the best vantage point for photographing the formal French gardens from above, revealing the intricate patterns that aren't always apparent from ground level.
