About Chateau de Lanquais
Add to favoritesThe Château de Lanquais boasts a silhouette unique in France, the result of a dramatic architectural transition. It comprises two distinct parts joined together: a powerful 14th-century medieval keep, a relic of the Hundred Years' War, and a sumptuous 16th-century Renaissance palace. This Renaissance wing was built by the same craftsmen who worked on the Louvre Palace, which explains the exceptional refinement of its façades and monumental fireplaces, unique in the region. Inside, the château reveals the daily life and power of the Gallard and Beynac families. Visitors can explore richly decorated rooms, where sculpted fireplaces and furnished apartments contrast with the defensive aspect of the medieval kitchens and dungeons. The estate is also renowned for its "unfinished" status: parts of the Renaissance project were never completed, offering a fascinating glimpse into the construction techniques of the period and the architectural ambitions of the Grand Siècle.
