This is where Henry IV, the "Vert Galant" (Green Gallant), was born in 1553. This royal castle, transformed into a national palace, is famous for its medieval exterior that conceals richly decorated Renaissance interiors. It houses a collection of Gobelins tapestries unique in the world, as well as the famous tortoise shell that served as the cradle of the future king. The estate is surrounded by a magnificent park with views of the Pyrenees mountain range. The guided tour takes you through the state apartments decorated during the reigns of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III, bearing witness to the enduring political importance of this place throughout the centuries.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Access to the gardens and the main courtyard is free. It's the perfect spot to admire the sunset over the mountains from the adjacent Boulevard des Pyrénées.
