About Villa Gallo-romaine de Montcaret
Add to favoritesClassified as a historical monument in the 19th century, this former 4th-century aristocratic residence impresses with the exceptional preservation of its decorations. The site is structured around a central courtyard and a vast private bath complex. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the reception hall (oecus), adorned with a mosaic carpet of over 40 square meters, composed of remarkably delicate geometric and floral motifs. These remains offer a fascinating glimpse into the Roman way of life, where comfort (underfloor heating via a hypocaust) and ostentation were paramount. The site has a unique historical feature: it is nestled within a Romanesque church built on the ruins of the villa. This superimposition allows us to understand the evolution of the site, from an ancient palace to a medieval religious center. The visit also includes a small site museum that displays everyday objects found during the excavations (ceramics, jewelry, coins), thus completing this journey through time which will delight both archaeology enthusiasts and families in search of history.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Observe the hypocaust: Don't miss the brick pillars in the baths area; they allowed hot air to circulate underground, a testament to Roman engineering ingenuity still visible today. The mosaic garden: Take the time to walk around the outside of the church to admire the open-air mosaics, protected but perfectly visible, which reveal intricate details of Solomon's knots and braids.
