About Chateau de Montsegur

Add to favorites

The Citadel of Vertigo Perched at an altitude of 1,207 meters on a rocky spur known as the "pog," the Château de Montségur majestically overlooks the Ariège department. This listed historical monument is world-renowned for having been the last major stronghold of Cathar resistance against the Inquisition and royal troops. The current ruins, although dating from after the tragic burning at the stake in 1244 where more than 200 believers perished, offer a striking immersion into medieval military architecture with its massive keep and curtain walls that seem to be one with the cliff face. Beyond its historical significance, a visit to Montségur is a unique sensory experience. After climbing the steep paths, visitors are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama of the Pyrenean peaks, the Tabe massif, and the plains of the Pays d'Olmes. The site is imbued with a mystical atmosphere, reinforced by the legends surrounding the supposed "treasure" of the Cathars and the solstice phenomena where the sun passes through the arrow slits of the castle, transforming the stone into a celestial calendar.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Don't make the mistake of limiting yourself to just the climb up to the castle! Your entrance ticket also includes access to the Historical and Archaeological Museum located in the village of Montségur, below. It is highly recommended to start with the museum: the models and exhibits (cannonballs, tools, jewelry) will allow you to visualize the daily life of the 600 people who lived up there and to better understand the structure of the now-vanished fortified village. Furthermore, be sure to wear good walking shoes, as the path is rocky and can be slippery in wet weather.
