About Ecomusee Departemental de Cuzals
Add to favoritesA Life-Sized Quercy Village The Cuzals Ecomuseum is not a typical museum; it's a true journey back in time, centered around the ruins of an old castle. On this vast estate, rural life in the Lot region from the late 19th century to the 1960s has been recreated. You'll discover authentic farms, a school from the French Republic, a printing press, and even a former gas station. It's a unique place to understand how the inhabitants of the Quercy lived, farmed, and entertained themselves before the widespread arrival of mechanization. The Revival of Forgotten Skills What makes Cuzals so magical are its live demonstrations. Every day, passionate artisans bring the skills of yesteryear back to life: the blacksmith hammers iron, the baker lights the wood-fired oven to bake traditional bread, and the basket weaver weaves willow. The site also showcases traditional agriculture with heritage crops and local animal breeds. It's an immersive and bucolic experience, where you can wander among dry-stone buildings at the pace of rural life.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Plan to spend the whole day there and wear good shoes: the estate is huge (20 hectares). I recommend arriving in the morning with a picnic (there are designated areas under the oak trees) so you can explore the trails at your own pace. Walking shoes are essential for enjoying the rocky paths.
