About Gouffre de Padirac

The Vertiginous City Suspended Between Heaven and Earth Clinging to a sheer cliff 120 meters above the Alzou canyon, the town of Rocamadour defies gravity and is one of the most iconic sites in Occitanie. A major stop on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago), this medieval village is explored in stages, symbolizing the spiritual ascent of pilgrims. From the lower part of the village to the castle that crowns the cliff, its winding streets and stone houses seem sculpted from the rock itself. The Padirac Chasm is a monumental natural cave located 11 km as the crow flies (17 km by car) from Rocamadour. Among caves and chasms, it is the most emblematic and the leading underground site in France. The opening is 35 meters in diameter, and the chasm plunges 75 meters below the surface of the limestone plateau. Deep underground, 103 meters below ground, flows the Padirac river, which runs through a network of galleries over 40km long!

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

The real secret? Wear non-slip shoes and a light sweater (it's a constant 13°C), even if it's sweltering outside, because the damp chill sets in quickly once you're standing still on the Rain Lake. On your return, instead of going straight back up in the elevator, take the time to observe the cave walls from the bottom: it's one of the few places where you truly grasp the scale of the work done by water over millions of years. Finally, for a unique photo without the reflection of the glass, the best spot is on the intermediate landings of the metal staircase, offering a bird's-eye view of the gaping chasm that seems to swallow the daylight.
