About Pont du Gard Et Musee

Add to favorites

The Pont du Gard is a three-tiered bridge built to carry a Roman aqueduct. It is located in Vers-Pont-du-Gard, between Uzès and Remoulins, near Nîmes, in the French department of Gard. It spans the Gardon River. Probably built in the first half of the 1st century, it ensured the continuity of the Roman aqueduct that carried water from Uzès to Nîmes. According to recent research, it ceased to be used at the beginning of the 6th century.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For a smart visit to the Pont du Gard, the trick is to avoid the main thoroughfare and gain some elevation. Upon arrival, take the marked "Mémoires de Garrigue" trail: it leads you to hidden viewpoints offering a breathtaking view of the three tiers of arches, far from the crowds gathered on the deck. For a truly immersive experience, don't just cross the modern bridge; be sure to book the guided tour of the aqueduct on the third level. Walking where water flowed 2,000 years ago is a breathtaking experience that 90% of tourists miss, remaining on the ground. The locals' real secret for a refreshing break? Head down to the right bank (Remoulins side) upstream from the bridge: you'll find small pebble coves perfect for swimming with the monument as your backdrop. If you have the time, walk a kilometer east to discover the remains of tunnels and arches "lost" in the vegetation, where the aqueduct resumed its terrestrial course. Finally, stay until dusk in summer: the lighting transforms the golden stone into a spectacular display of fire, without the daytime noise and chaos.
