About Sites Et Musee Archeologiques de Montmaurin
Add to favoritesThe Montmaurin complex is world-renowned for its caves nestled in the Save gorges, where a prehistoric human jawbone dating back over 200,000 years was discovered in 1949. But the site also dazzles with its Gallo-Roman villa of La Hillère, one of the largest and richest in Gaul. This 4th-century aristocratic residence covered nearly 20 hectares and boasted interior gardens, private temples, and a sophisticated heating system. The remains reveal a lavish lifestyle, marked by the use of Pyrenean marble and refined mosaics. The archaeological museum, located in the heart of the village of Montmaurin, serves as a link between these two eras. It displays the treasures discovered during excavations: stone tools, remains of glacial fauna (cave lions, mammoths), and objects from Gallo-Roman daily life. The visit offers a rare perspective on the continuity of human habitation in a preserved natural setting, where the harshness of the lives of early humans contrasts with the unheard-of luxury of Roman landowners a few millennia later.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The Gorges Trail: Don't limit yourself to the museum and the villa. Take the hiking trail that winds through the Save Gorges to see the entrances to the caves (some can only be visited from the outside for protection). The landscape is wild and spectacular. Marble in the spotlight: In the villa, pay particular attention to the columns and veneers; they come from the nearby Saint-Béat marble quarries, proving that a short supply chain already existed for prestigious materials!
