About Abbaye de Senanque
Add to favoritesNestled in a verdant valley near Gordes, Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey is one of Provence's most iconic gems. Founded in 1148, this Cistercian abbey captivates visitors with the austerity of its Romanesque architecture, whose pure lines immediately inspire serenity. It remains a place of prayer inhabited by a community of monks, lending the site an atmosphere of authentic spirituality, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. The most famous sight is undoubtedly its lavender fields, which stretch out at the foot of the gray stone walls. In summer, the contrast between the vibrant purple of the flowers and the monastic simplicity of the building creates a scene of rare beauty, which has become a symbol of the Luberon. Inside, the tour takes you through the light-filled cloister, the abbey church stripped of all artifice and the scriptorium, bearing witness to a way of life focused on the essential and silence.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The "Lavender" Timing: To admire the fields in full bloom, aim for the period between late June and mid-July. Keep in mind, however, that the harvest usually takes place before August. Arrive as soon as it opens (around 9:30 am) to enjoy the soft light and avoid the crowds of tour groups. Book for the Interior: Access to the outdoor fields is free (and regulated to protect the flowers), but visits to the historic buildings often require reservations, especially during peak season. If you're looking for a more profound experience, you can even attend one of the daily services with the monks.
