About Abbaye de Beaulieu en Rouergue
Add to favoritesLocated in the Tarn-et-Garonne region, Beaulieu-en-Rouergue Abbey is a masterpiece of 12th-century Cistercian art. Its abbey church, with its exemplary architectural simplicity, invites contemplation through its pure lines and ever-changing light. The building has retained its original character, bearing witness to the rigor and spiritual quest of the monks who inhabited it for centuries. Since the 1970s, the abbey has experienced a renaissance thanks to the modern art collection bequeathed by Geneviève Bonnefoi and Pierre Brache. The monks' dormitories and vaulted rooms now house one of the richest collections of post-war abstract art in France. This unexpected encounter between centuries-old stone and contemporary boldness creates a unique visual dialogue, enhanced by formal French gardens and an exceptional rose garden.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Don't miss the rose garden: The abbey boasts a magnificent collection of old roses; the best time to visit is between mid-May and June to enjoy the fragrances and colors. The hiking trail: A small path leads from the abbey up the surrounding hills, offering a breathtaking view of the building's slate roofs.
