About Basilique Notre-dame-de-la-garde la Bonne Mere

Add to favorites

Architecturally, the current building, consecrated in 1864, is the work of the architect Henri Espérandieu. It comprises two parts: a lower church (the crypt), carved into the rock and of austere appearance, and an upper church, richly decorated. Its 41-meter bell tower is surmounted by a nearly 10-meter-high statue of the Virgin and Child, covered in gold, which serves as a landmark for miles around. The basilica is built on the foundations of a former 16th-century fort, the remains of which, along with the emblem of Francis I, can still be seen. From a tourist perspective, Notre-Dame de la Garde is the most visited site in Marseille. Beyond its religious significance, it offers a truly breathtaking panoramic view. The site includes a small museum recounting the history of the hill and the basilica, as well as a shop and a restaurant ("L'Eau Vive"). To get there, the Little Train of Marseille from the Old Port is the most picturesque option, but bus line 60 remains the most convenient. It's a place that breathes the Marseille soul, a blend of popular fervor and local pride.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For a truly insightful visit to Notre-Dame de la Garde, the "Good Mother," the visual trick is not to simply admire the gilded statue outside, but to scrutinize the walls of the upper chapel. Look for the ex-votos: hundreds of small paintings, model ships, and marble plaques offered by sailors, athletes (including players from Olympique de Marseille), and families. This is where the heart of Marseille's people beats. The real secret lies in the contrast between the crypt and the upper basilica. Start with the crypt, dark and carved into the rock, to feel the protective aspect of the fortress. Then, ascend to the upper church for the striking display of Byzantine mosaics: look up at the domes to admire the gold and the vibrant colors that burst forth as soon as the sun streams through the windows. Finally, for the view, the trick is to walk all the way around the exterior terrace. Don't just stay facing the Old Port; Head to the south side to see the Frioul Islands and the Château d'If, and to the east side to admire the Pagnol hills. For a unique photo, look for the bullet and shell impacts on the north walls, remnants of the Liberation battles in 1944.
