About Chateau de Gordes

Add to favorites

Majestically dominating the village square, the Château de Gordes is an imposing fortress that perfectly marks the transition between the austerity of the Middle Ages and the elegance of the Renaissance. Rebuilt in 1031 and then extensively remodeled in 1525 by the Simiane family, this edifice is distinguished by its massive architecture of blond limestone. Its north and east façades retain a defensive aspect with round machicolated towers, while the south façade opens onto the village through richly decorated mullioned windows, a testament to the refinement of the Provençal Renaissance. The interior of the château is a journey through time, famous in particular for its monumental fireplace dating from 1541, a sculpted masterpiece over seven meters wide adorned with columns and delicate friezes. Long associated with contemporary art, the château has housed the Victor Vasarely Museum, and later the Pol Mara Museum. Today, it serves as a showcase for high-caliber temporary exhibitions and houses the tourist office, while remaining the historical guardian of Luberon traditions. Its vaulted rooms and spiral staircases transport visitors into the private world of a great Provençal noble lineage.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Many tourists are content to admire the castle from the outside while having a coffee in the square. It's a mistake to miss the interior, not only for the monumental fireplace (which truly is one of the finest in France), but especially for access to the upper floors. The castle windows offer unique, elevated, photographic views of the village's slate roofs and the valley below, views you won't find anywhere else.
