About Chateau de Lourmarin

Add to favorites

The Château de Lourmarin is distinguished by its two sections from different periods, which together form a harmonious whole. The older section, the Château Vieux (Old Castle), dates from the 15th century and retains a defensive aspect inherited from the Middle Ages. To this structure was added, in the 16th century, a Renaissance wing of great elegance. This wing is characterized by its Italianate galleries, mullioned windows, and above all, its remarkable spiral staircase, whose technical prowess continues to fascinate architects today. Saved from ruin at the beginning of the 20th century by the industrialist Robert Laurent-Vibert, the château is now a vibrant cultural center. The interior is richly furnished and decorated with art collections, antique furniture, and musical instruments. The château is also renowned for its artistic mission: each summer, it hosts young artists in residence (painters, sculptors, musicians), thus perpetuating the spirit of patronage envisioned by its savior.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Sunset from the terraces: If you have the chance, visit the castle at the end of the day. The terraces offer breathtaking views of the village of Lourmarin and the surrounding olive groves. The Provençal stone takes on a magnificent golden hue, perfect for photographers. The discovery trail: Don't just stay inside. Take the time to walk around the outside of the castle along the footpath. This allows you to appreciate the striking contrast between the medieval towers and the Renaissance loggias, while enjoying the tranquility of the park.
