About l Ile des Machines
Add to favoritesLes Machines de l'île is an exhibition and performance space located in Nantes, France. Created by François Delarozière (Artistic Director) and Pierre Orefice, it is located on the island of Nantes, in the Chantiers park, on the site of former disused shipyards.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
For a smart visit to the Machines of the Isle, the key is not to simply admire the Great Elephant from afar: if you're not going aboard, position yourself in its path as it prepares to trumpet, but keep a safe distance if you want to avoid a free shower from its water jet! For an interactive experience, head to the Machines Gallery: the secret is to enthusiastically raise your hand when the guides are looking for volunteers to pilot the creatures (like the caterpillar or the giant ant). It's the only way to go from spectator to true machinist of the imagination. The real best plan is to combine your visit with a stroll on the Heron Tree (if the sections are accessible) or to climb to the top of the Marine Worlds Carousel to observe the workings of the gears in the open. For the perfect photo, don't stay at the foot of the machines; Climb onto the walkways of the old shipyards to capture the metal structure with the Loire River in the background. Finally, end your visit with a tour of the workshop via the terraces: it's there, behind the large windows, that you'll see the craftsmen sculpting wood and welding steel, revealing the raw magic of building future mechanical marvels.
