About CITADELLE SOUTERRAINE DE VERDUN

On February 21, 1916, at 8:15 a.m., the German army launched its major offensive on Verdun. The first shells fell on the citadel. As planned, the garrison headquarters and certain civilian services took refuge in these galleries dug under 16 meters of rock. From then on, the citadel was organized like a small underground city with ceaseless activity: offices for the headquarters and its services, immense dormitories for the troops, powder and ammunition stores to supply the front, a bakery with nine bread ovens producing 41,000 rations a day, facilities for soldiers' rest and recreation, a telephone exchange, an infirmary, all lit by an electric power plant. Never hit by the bombardments, these underground galleries played a decisive moral and logistical role. In the presence of French and Allied political figures and military authorities, the President of the Republic, Raymond Poincaré, presented eight honorary medals to representatives of the city of Verdun. Today, with 26 medals, Verdun is the most decorated city in France.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For a truly engaging visit to the Verdun Underground Citadel, the key is to understand that this isn't your typical trench museum, but a veritable logistics city. The tour takes place in small automated pods: to best enjoy the holographic projections and augmented reality, try to sit in the front seats. The secret is to listen carefully to the story of Private Jean-Pierre, which serves as a guide, to fully appreciate the soundscape and the constant humidity (it's 7°C year-round, so bring a jacket even in summer). The real historical secret lies at the end of the tour, in the room where the Unknown Soldier was chosen. Don't rush through: it was here, in 1920, that the young soldier Auguste Thin placed a bouquet of flowers on the sixth coffin. For a complete experience, look up at the brick vaults: they withstood massive bombardments thanks to the thickness of earth above. Finally, complete your visit by walking along the often-overlooked outer ramparts of the upper citadel, which offer a strategic view of the Meuse River.
