About Ile d Arz

Add to favorites

The understated charm of the "little" island Less rugged than its neighbor Île-aux-Moines, Île d'Arz captivates visitors with its authentic, wild, and peaceful character. Five kilometers long, it is easily explored on foot or by bicycle, offering a succession of coves with calm waters and fishermen's houses with colorful shutters. Its name, "the island of captains," comes from its long maritime tradition: in the past, many merchant marine officers made their home here, drawn by the gentle pace of life on this Breton islet where nature reigns supreme. A heritage between land and sea The highlight is undoubtedly the Berno tidal mill, magnificently restored, which testifies to the ingenuity of the former inhabitants in harnessing the power of the tides. Following the coastal path (approximately 17 km for the complete loop), you'll discover salt marshes, headlands offering 360° panoramic views of the Gulf, and a 12th-century Romanesque church in the heart of the village. It's an ideal destination for those looking to "unplug" in a picture-postcard setting, amidst hydrangeas and turquoise waters.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

The bike vs. walking option: If you want to explore all the headlands in a single day at a leisurely pace, rent a bike as soon as you arrive at the pier. However, to reach the most secluded coves, walking remains the best way to discover them. Check the tides for the mill: To see the Berno tidal mill in action or simply admire its mechanism with the water, check the tide times. At low tide, the landscape changes dramatically, revealing vast oyster beds.
