About Forteresse de Montbazon
Add to favoritesThe Sentinel of Anjou Proudly overlooking the Indre Valley from its rocky spur, the Château de Montbazon houses one of the oldest stone keeps in France still standing. Built at the end of the 10th century by the formidable Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, this site is a raw and authentic testament to medieval military architecture. Far removed from the more "pleasure" châteaux of the Loire Valley, Montbazon commands respect with its massive stature and turbulent history, marked by the rivalries between the Houses of Anjou and Blois. A Lively Immersion in the Middle Ages Today, the fortress stands out for its interactive and family-friendly atmosphere. It's not a silent visit: the site comes alive with historical reenactments and demonstrations of medieval crafts. There you can observe siege engines in action (such as the trebuchet), discover the work of the blacksmith, the calligrapher, or the stonemason. It's a place where you can touch, test, and learn while having fun, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding area from the top of its ramparts.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Aim for the evening events: In summer, the castle often offers torchlit evenings. The atmosphere is magical and much cooler than under the afternoon sun on the dry stone walls. Wear good shoes: The site is steep, and the dungeon stairs are narrow and authentic (so a bit rough). Avoid flip-flops to fully enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies of the fortress.
