About Brienne-le-chateau
Add to favoritesStanding proudly above the town and the Champagne plains, the Château de Brienne is one of the largest and most elegant neoclassical buildings in the region. Rebuilt in the 18th century by Louis-Marie-Athanase de Loménie, this grand estate features a monumental facade and a vast courtyard. However, its international fame is forever linked to Napoleon Bonaparte: it was here, at the Royal Military School of Brienne, that the future Emperor studied from 1779 to 1784, shaping his military genius. The estate is an "extravagant" display of stone and symmetry. While the interior is currently used as a healthcare facility (limiting access to the staterooms), the exterior and the park offer a powerful historical walk. Visitors can admire the sober and balanced architecture typical of the Enlightenment. Paired with a visit to the nearby Napoleon Museum in the former school, Brienne Castle is a key historical and architectural landmark in the Aube department.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Must-Do: Visit the Napoleon Museum in the town center before heading up to the castle to understand the site's importance in the Emperor's life. Photo Tip: The view from the castle ramp offers a superb panorama of Brienne's rooftops.
