About Chateau de Girecourt
Add to favoritesBuilt in the mid-16th century by Pierre de Haraucourt, the Château de Girecourt is a rare surviving example of transitional architecture in the Vosges. This "water-bound" fortress has preserved its medieval silhouette with four imposing corner towers and deep moats, while embracing the elegance of the Renaissance. A listed Historic Monument, the castle is striking for its solid construction and refined sandstone facades, a hallmark of the regional style. Crossing the bridge into Girecourt means stepping into the private world of a Lorraine noble house that survived the ravages of the Thirty Years' War. The interior reveals architectural treasures, including traditional French-style ceilings and monumental fireplaces. It is an "extravagant" destination for its sheer authenticity, offering visitors a timeless escape where the strength of a stronghold meets the tranquility of a lush estate bordered by the gentle Durbion River.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
For the perfect photo, walk all the way around the moats on the outer path. When the wind drops, the Durbion river turns into a perfect mirror, making the massive towers look as if they are floating between the sky and the water. It’s the most poetic moment of the visit.
