About Chateau de Vaux
Add to favoritesThe Château de Vaux is an 18th-century architectural gem in the Aube region, deeply connected to the influential de Maupas family. In 1720, Jacques-Roch de Maupas, a prominent legal official from Troyes, commissioned the renowned architect Jean-Baptiste Bouchardon to design this grand country estate. Built to showcase the prestige of a family of high-ranking magistrates, the castle stands out for its refined classical lines and the elegant limestone characteristic of the Champagne area. The estate reached its political peak during the First Empire under Prefect Maupas but fell into a tragic state of decay during the 20th century, eventually left ruined and overgrown. Its "incredible adventure" began in 2017 when the young enthusiast Édouard Guyot purchased the site to start one of France’s most ambitious private restoration projects. Visitors today witness a striking balance between noble reception rooms being brought back to life and the raw, authentic grit of a massive historical rescue mission.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The Heritage Tip: Look closely at the stonemasons' marks on the newly carved stones in the main courtyard. For the best experience, try the "Vidocq investigation" game—it’s the most fun way to explore the castle’s hidden corners and history.
