About Chateau Fort de Fleckenstein
Add to favoritesStanding like a stone ship atop a 90-meter-long sandstone ridge, Fleckenstein Castle is a masterpiece of medieval engineering. Built in the 12th century, this semi-troglodyte fortress was carved directly into the pink sandstone of the Northern Vosges. For 600 years, it remained an impregnable stronghold for the Barons of Fleckenstein until it was eventually dismantled by Louis XIV's troops in 1680. Today, its rock-cut rooms, hidden staircases, and ancient cisterns offer a captivating journey into the heart of the Middle Ages. The estate has reinvented the traditional castle visit with "The Castle of Challenges," an interactive adventure that turns the ruins into a giant puzzle for families. Beyond the historical intrigue, the site is a nature lover's paradise. Climbing to the top of the rock rewards visitors with a stunning 360-degree panorama of the dense Vosges forest and the Sauer Valley, making it a perfect blend of architectural wonder and raw natural beauty.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
The Best Route: Wear sturdy hiking shoes! After exploring the rock-cut rooms, take the "Charcoal Burners' Trail" (Sentier des Charbonniers) nearby to learn about the ancient local forest industry. It’s an easy, shaded walk perfect for photographers.
