About Chateau Ferte Milon

Add to favorites

The Château de La Ferté-Milon is a one-of-a-kind silhouette whose grandeur lies in its unfinished state. Commissioned in 1393 by Louis d’Orléans, brother of King Charles VI, the project was intended to be a residential fortress of absolute modern standards for its time. The centerpiece is the monumental facade, 38 meters high and 102 meters long, acting as both a defensive curtain wall and a grand ceremonial frontage. Above the old fortified gate, it features a masterful high-relief of the Coronation of the Virgin, intended to welcome visitors into a royal palace that was never completed following the Duke’s assassination in 1407. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1862, the site is much more than its spectacular wall. The estate includes extensive ramparts and the remains of ancient medieval towers that illustrate the town's complex defensive system. Although the interior living quarters remained a "dream in stone," the castle's esplanade offers a timeless walk. Visitors can wander between the massive limestone walls and enjoy stunning views of the Ourcq Valley, the very birthplace of the legendary playwright Jean Racine.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

Look Up: Admire the delicate details of the Virgin's relief, miraculously preserved for centuries. Pro Tip: Follow the path along the ramparts for a bird's-eye view of the town's rooftops and the winding Ourcq river.
