About Domaine de Courances

Add to favorites

The Château de Courances, located 47 kilometers southeast of Paris in the Essonne department of the Île-de-France region, has been a listed historical monument since June 27, 1983. The château, both in style and dating from the Louis XIII period, reveals itself through its architecture, including its construction, renovations, and restorations. Its current appearance is particularly marked by the alterations carried out, notably in the 19th century by Baron Samuel de Haber, particularly its horseshoe-shaped staircase and red brick facades. The 75-hectare park reflects the different eras and owners who have shaped it. A Renaissance water garden, a formal French garden, and a Japanese garden coexist harmoniously. The entire estate is fed by 14 springs and punctuated by 17 ponds.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

At the Domaine de Courances, the highlight remains its 75-hectare park, considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance water gardens. Be sure to stroll along its fourteen springs and canals with their ever-changing reflections, creating an atmosphere of absolute serenity. It is a rare example of a formal French garden where nature seems to tame water with perfect geometric elegance. For a culinary experience, make a detour to the Jardin de Foulerie, the tea room located in a former hemp mill, to enjoy homemade pastries while admiring the Japanese garden. For a more rustic and authentic experience, take home some organic vegetables from the Potager du Château, one of the largest working market gardens in the region, which supplies many Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris.
