About Mad Musee des Arts Decoratifs

Add to favorites

Located in the Marsan wing of the Louvre Palace, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) is one of the world's leading museums of its kind. Unlike the Louvre, which focuses on fine arts, the MAD celebrates the genius of objects, craftsmanship, and design. Its vast collections span more than eight centuries of history, from the Middle Ages to contemporary creation, encompassing furniture, jewelry, toys, silverware, and ceramics. Here, one understands how art has become part of everyday life, from the courts of kings to modern apartments. The museum is particularly renowned for its "Period Rooms": faithful reconstructions of period salons where visitors can wander through authentic settings (such as Marie Antoinette's gilded cabinet or Jeanne Lanvin's Art Deco apartment). In addition to its permanent collections, the MAD is a global temple of fashion and graphic design, hosting blockbuster temporary exhibitions (Dior, Schiaparelli) that attract enthusiasts from all over the world. The very architecture of the building, nestled between the historic stones of the Louvre and a modern museography, offers a unique visual experience on the Rue de Rivoli.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

The most common mistake is trying to see everything at once, as the museum is huge and spread over several floors in two wings. My expert advice: start on the top floor (level 9) and work your way down. This allows you to follow the chronology in reverse or focus on modern design while being less tired.
