About Chateau de Bonaguil

Add to favorites

A fortified castle dating from the 13th, 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries, listed as a Historical Monument, Bonaguil Castle is located in the Lot-et-Garonne department, on the border with the Lot and a stone's throw from the Dordogne. It is only 2 hours from Bordeaux and Toulouse, and 1 hour from Agen, Cahors, and Sarlat. Perched atop its rocky spur, it overlooks the valley and the medieval village. It forms a unique ensemble in Europe, of gigantic proportions and in a remarkable state of preservation. During a guided or self-guided visit, Bonaguil, its keep, its cave, its drawbridge, and more, immerses you in the heart of medieval history. Today, Bonaguil is an essential reference for specialists, an ideal educational tool for students and teachers, and a place of enjoyment for every visitor.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

For a truly insightful visit to Bonaguil, the key is to understand that this castle is a historical anomaly: it was built using ultra-modern (for the time) defensive techniques after the feudal era had already ended. Look for the "moineaux" (the small vaulted firing chambers at the foot of the moats): this is one of the few places in France where you can enter these fortified structures and imagine the roar of the culverins. The real secret lies hidden in the Tour-Grosse (Great Tower): don't just admire its bulk, but climb to the top to observe the timber frame and the view over the surrounding valleys. For an unusual experience, locate the latrine drainage system and the ventilation ducts: the details of the "modern" comforts of the time are fascinating. Finally, for the most impressive photo, leave the castle walls and descend to the path that circles the moat. It is from below that one realizes the dizzying height of the 35-meter walls and the ingenuity of the staggered defense system.
