Chateau de Hautefort

A former medieval fortress transformed into a pleasure residence in the 17th century, Hautefort is unique in the Périgord region. With its Mansard roofs and domes, it evokes the châteaux of the Loire Valley or the Paris region more than the local fortified castles. Completely restored by Baroness de Bastard after a devastating fire in 1968, it stands as a testament to an unprecedented act of architectural faith. The building stands proudly on a rocky spur, overlooking the village of the same name. The gardens of Hautefort are among the most beautiful in France. Classified as "Remarkable Gardens," they feature meticulously trimmed boxwood parterres and English-style flower gardens that stretch as far as the eye can see. The interior is richly furnished and decorated with fine woodwork. The château is also renowned for its exceptional timber framing and its art gallery, which recounts the history of the powerful lords of Hautefort.
