About Chateau de Puyguilhem

Add to favorites

The Château de Puyguilhem is a spectacular architectural feat, often compared to the royal residences of the Loire Valley. Built in the early 16th century for Mondot de La Marthonie, a high-ranking magistrate and close advisor to King Francis I, it stands as a prime example of early Renaissance style in the Périgord Vert. The castle’s structure beautifully bridges the gap between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, featuring defensive towers adorned with delicate Italianate carvings and ornate dormer windows. Inside, the castle boasts some of the finest interior decorations in the region. Visitors are often captivated by the monumental fireplaces, particularly the one depicting the Labors of Hercules, a true masterpiece of stone carving. After facing near-dereliction in the early 20th century, a meticulous state-led restoration brought this gem back to life. Surrounded by lush greenery, Puyguilhem offers a serene and aristocratic atmosphere, making it a must-visit for those exploring the hidden history of Southwestern France.

Tip for an even more exceptional visit.

The Stone Hercules: Take time to admire the fireplace in the Great Hall. The details of the "Labors of Hercules" are so exquisite that they attest to the presence of the finest sculptors of the royal era in this province. Combine your visit: The castle is just minutes from the Villars Caves and Boschaud Abbey. Plan a full day to explore these three major sites within a very small area. The perfect photo: The best angle to capture the elegance of the roofs and sculpted chimneys is from the path leading to the castle, with the oak forests in the background.
