About Chateau de Cadillac
Add to favoritesBuilt in the early 17th century by Jean-Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, the first Duke of Épernon and a favorite of King Henry III, the Ducal Castle of Cadillac is a pioneering example of French classical architecture. Designed to showcase absolute power, it features interiors of exceptional richness: ornate painted ceilings, historical tapestries, and eight monumental polychrome marble fireplaces, hailed as masterpieces of French sculpture. The monument’s history is defined by a striking contrast highlighted by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. After its era of ducal splendor, the castle was transformed into France's first women's prison (1818–1952) and later a "reform school" for girls. This stark transition from aristocratic opulence to the harsh reality of confinement offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to explore both the heights of French nobility and the moving social history of the prisoners.
Tip for an even more exceptional visit.
Cultural Tip: Check out the temporary exhibitions often held in the attic space. Don't miss: The castle is located inside the medieval walled town (bastide); take a stroll along the town walls after exploring the ducal palace.
