The Montmaurin complex is world-renowned for its caves nestled in the Save gorges, where a prehistoric human jawbone dating back over 200,000 years was discovered in 1949. But the site also dazzles with its Gallo-Roman villa of La Hillère, one of the largest and richest in Gaul. This 4th-century aristocratic residence covered nearly 20 hectares and boasted interior gardens, private temples, and a sophisticated heating system. The remains reveal a lavish lifestyle, marked by the use of Pyrenean marble and refined mosaics. The archaeological museum, located in the heart of the village of Montmaurin, serves as a link between these two eras. It displays the treasures discovered during excavations: stone tools, remains of glacial fauna (cave lions, mammoths), and objects from Gallo-Roman daily life.
